Medicare Supplements / Medigap - 7 Things To Know
Medicare Supplement and Medigap mean the same thing.
Each plan is represented by a letter, which means certain benefits. The coverage for each letter plan is the same at any company that offers it.
Although the coverage for any particular Medicare Supplement is the same at each company, monthly rates vary.
When you have a Medicare Supplement policy it is secondary to Medicare A & B. Medicare determines what is covered and pays first, your Medicare Supplement plan pays second and covers whatever Medicare covers.
You have the flexibility to choose any doctor or medical provider that accepts Medicare as your primary insurance. Standard Medicare Supplement plans do not have doctor networks that you must stay in.
Once you have a Medicare Supplement policy it is guaranteed to renew each year as long as you pay your premium. Your policy can never be canceled based on your age or health.
The premium you pay for your plan is never based on your individual health or claims history.
Top Plans Comparison Chart
As we have said before, Medicare Supplement plans help you cover out of pocket costs under parts A & B. These are the deductibles, copays, and coinsurance that you are liable for when you receive care. Having a policy can allow you to have better access to care and more stability. These are your common out of pocket costs, the represents whether the supplemental plan covers it. These are the most popular Medicare Supplement plans.
Medicare Part A & B Costs
Part A Hospital Deductible
Part A Hospital Copays
Part A Reserve Days
Part A Skilled Nursing Copays

Plan F Plan G Plan N
Note: Plan N also has a $20 copay for doctors visits and a $50 copay for emergency room, if not admitted to hospital. Plan F also has a high deductible version. It works the same as standard Plan F (above) except you have to cover Medicare deductibles and co-insurance until you reach your out of pocket ($2,300 in 2019) for the year. High Deductible F will then cover 100% of deductibles and co-insurance for Medicare covered services. This benefits chart and the summaries below are intended to provide a basic overview. For more in depth info, please refer to the guide "Choosing A Medigap Policy" and the Medicare Supplement Outline in the downloads section of this page.
